Serious traffic disruption on the A4 from 7-31 May

press release Rijkswaterstaat

In May, Rijkswaterstaat will carry out major maintenance on the A4 motorway in the direction of Amsterdam, between the Burgerveen junction and Schiphol. The work will take place on the A4 in the direction of Amsterdam, but there will be serious traffic disruption in both directions. First of all, because the road to The Hague will be completely closed for a weekend. But also the rest of the time, only a limited number of lanes are open in both directions, where a speed limit of 70 km/h applies. As a result, the extra travel time can be more than 30 minutes. The work will continue day and night, seven days a week to ensure that traffic disruption is as short as possible.

Weekend 7 – 10 May: A4 in the direction of The Hague closed and two lanes in the direction of Amsterdam
During the first weekend of the works, the A4 in the direction of The Hague will be completely closed to traffic from the junction with the A44 at the Burgerveen junction. This will take place from 21:00 on Friday evening 7 May to 05:00 on Monday 10 May.

  • Traffic in the direction of The Hague will be diverted via the A44 – N44. Yellow signs indicate the diversion route on site.

Two lanes will remain open on the A4 for traffic in the direction of Amsterdam.

10 – 31 May: fewer lanes in both directions
From 05:00 on Monday morning, May 10 to 05:00 on Monday May 31, four lanes will be open to traffic in both directions. To make this possible, traffic in the direction of Amsterdam will be partly diverted on the opposite side of the road. The speed limit between the Burgerveen junction and the De Hoek junction will therefore be reduced to 70 km/h. Due to the narrower roads and reduced speed, road users should expect an extra travel time of more than 30 minutes.

Alternative traffic routes
Rijkswaterstaat advises road users to choose the following alternative routes:

Traffic departing from Amsterdam
– direction Rotterdam via the A2 – A12 – A20
– direction The Hague via the A2 – A12
– direction Wassenaar/The Hague via the N205 – N207

Traffic departing from The Hague
– direction Amsterdam: via A12 and A2
– via Wassenaar direction Amsterdam: via the A44, N207 and N205

A4 in the direction of Amsterdam: pay attention to slip roads
For a few nights, slip roads of the A4 in the direction of Amsterdam will be closed. In addition, the exits between the Burgerveen junction and Schiphol are inaccessible for traffic in the direction of Amsterdam that drives on the opposite side of the A4 because of the intervening crash barriers. For the Hoofddorp (3) and Hoofddorp-Zuid (3a) exits, yellow signs indicate the diversion route on site.
